Jonathan Marc Gribetz is a Professor of Near Eastern Studies and Judaic Studies at Princeton University, serving as Director of the Transregional Institute. He holds Associated Faculty status in the Departments of History and Religion. His research focuses on the history of Palestine/Israel, Jewish-Arab encounters, and the intersection of religion and nationalism in the modern Middle East. Gribetz earned a PhD in History from Columbia University, an MSt from Oxford, and an AB from Harvard.
His major works include Reading Herzl in Beirut (2024), analyzing PLO intellectual engagement with Jewish-Zionist studies, and Defining Neighbors (2014), exploring early Zionist-Arab mutual perceptions. He has received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and a Fulbright Scholarship. His research has garnered awards including the 2024 National Jewish Book Award in History.
Gribetz advises PhD students on modern Palestinian-Israeli history and Holy Land communal interactions. He previously taught at Rutgers University and held fellowships at Harvard, Toronto, and Penn. His editorial role includes co-editing the AJS Review.
