Jonathan Levine is the J.N. Allison Professor in Environmental Studies and Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Princeton University, serving as Chair of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and on the Leadership Team of the Carbon Mitigation Initiative. He holds affiliations with the High Meadows Environmental Institute (HMEI) and focuses on Biodiversity, biological invasions, and ecological responses to climate change.
Levine earned his PhD in 2001 from UC Berkeley, followed by postdoctoral research at Imperial College, Silwood Park. He previously held positions at UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, and ETH Zurich before joining Princeton in 2019. His research bridges theory and empirical studies, exploring species coexistence, plant invasions, and climate change impacts on communities.
His lab investigates mechanisms like temporal storage effects, trait-based coexistence, and eco-evolutionary dynamics. Notable work includes studies on climate-driven range shifts, invasive species phenology, and the role of rapid evolution in species persistence. Current and former students include leaders in ecology, conservation, and academia.
Levine’s work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, with over 150 publications in top journals like *Nature* and *Science*. His lab actively fosters diversity in ecology through mentorship and principles of inclusivity, collaboration, and scientific rigor.
