Jonathan L. Haines, PhD, serves as Chair of the Department of Population and Quantitative Health Sciences and holds the Mary W. Sheldon MD Professor of Genomic Sciences appointment at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He maintains additional professorships in the Department of Genetics and Genome Sciences and the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, and founded and directs the Cleveland Institute for Computational Biology, a collaboration between Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center.
With over 30 years of experience in genetic epidemiology, Dr. Haines has established himself as a world leader in defining the genetic architecture of complex diseases. His research focuses on neurological and ophthalmological disorders including Alzheimer's disease, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma, with credit for locating more than 20 causal and 300 associated genetic loci. He leads international consortia dedicated to aggregating and analyzing large-scale biological datasets with particular emphasis on including historically underrepresented populations in genetic research.
Dr. Haines' work integrates electronic health records with biospecimen data to understand disease mechanisms across the spectrum from diagnosis to prevention. He has secured more than $115 million in research funding throughout his career, including a $14 million NIH grant for the Collaborative for Alzheimer's Disease Research (CADRE) which analyzes sequenced samples from over 60,000 individuals across diverse populations.
