Jonathan L. Deenik is a Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Agronomy and Soil Science at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR). His research focuses on soil health, fertility, and mineralogy, with a strong emphasis on tropical soils and sustainable agricultural practices. He has received multiple teaching and research awards, including the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research (2023) and Excellence in Teaching Award (2015).
Dr. Deenik holds a Ph.D., M.Sc., and B.A. from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (Agronomy and Soil Science) and The College of Wooster (History/Art History). He teaches courses like TPSS/NREM 304/304L (Fundamentals of Soil Science) and leads initiatives such as the Hawaiʻi Soil Health project. His work bridges academic research, extension services, and community engagement, addressing challenges like soil organic matter dynamics, biochar applications, and climate resilience in tropical agroecosystems.
His research spans wildfire impacts on soil carbon, volcanic soil characterization, and nutrient cycling in diverse landscapes. He collaborates on projects like the Children’s Healthy Living Program, linking environmental and public health outcomes in Pacific Island communities. Dr. Deenik’s publications highlight innovative methods in soil analysis and interdisciplinary approaches to sustainable resource management.
