Jonathan Gootenberg serves as an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School and Staff Scientist at the Center for Virology and Vaccine Research, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), where he leads the Gootenberg Laboratory. His work integrates virology, vaccine development, and systems biology to address emerging infectious disease challenges through interdisciplinary approaches.
He earned a B.S. in Mathematics and Biological Engineering from MIT (2013) and a Ph.D. in Systems Biology from Harvard University (2018), followed by a McGovern Fellowship at MIT (2019-2023). His research focuses on viral pathogenesis mechanisms, diagnostic tool development, and vaccine design strategies, leveraging computational and experimental methodologies to innovate in pandemic preparedness.
Dr. Gootenberg's scientific contributions have been recognized with extensive honors including:
- Forbes 30 Under 30 in Healthcare (2017)
- MIT Technology Review 35 Under 35 (2021)
- Endpoints 20 Under 40 (2022)
- Henri Termeer Scholar (2022)
- National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (2014)
- Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (2014)
His research is supported by major federal fellowships including the National Defense Science and Engineering Fellowship and DOE Computational Fellowship, enabling high-impact virology studies. As laboratory director, he oversees collaborative projects at BIDMC's Center for Virology and Vaccine Research, focusing on translating basic science discoveries into clinical applications for global health security.
