Prof. Jonathan Finch is a Professor of Archaeology at the University of York, specializing in historical archaeology with a focus on post-medieval landscapes, slavery's legacy, and commemoration practices. He leads the MA in Historical Archaeology and chairs the Departmental Research Committee. His research bridges global connections between UK and Caribbean landscapes, particularly through studies of plantation economies and colonial legacies. Finch has directed excavations at sites like Breary Banks (WWI camp) and Barbados plantations, emphasizing marginalized communities. He co-leads the EUROTAST network on transatlantic slavery and chairs the ENCOUNTER network on European estate landscapes.
Education: PhD in History from University of East Anglia (1996), funded by AHRB. Previously taught at University of Wales, Bangor and part-time at UEA. Awards include Fellowship of the Society of Antiquaries (2006) and AHRC Peer Review College membership (2008).
Research Interests: Designed landscapes (Brown/Repton), global estate comparisons, archaeology of enslavement, commemoration in colonial contexts, and WWI military landscapes. Active in public archaeology through projects like Harewood House and Nidderdale's HLF-funded Breary Banks excavation.
Grants & Collaborations: Secured over £600k for EUROTAST, plus funding for projects on Barbados plantations, Yorkshire reservoir camps, and estate digital resources. Collaborates internationally with institutions in Denmark, Sweden, Ireland, and the US.
Publications span 40+ articles/books on topics like plantation archaeology, commemoration practices, and Capability Brown's influence. Supervises PhDs on topics ranging from medieval castles to transatlantic horticultural networks.
