Dr. Jonathan Evans is a Reader in Translation Studies at the University of Glasgow, having joined as Senior Lecturer in 2020 and promoted to Reader in 2024. Previously, he held academic positions at the University of Exeter, University of Hull, and University of Portsmouth. His work centers on translation's intersections with culture, politics, and media, particularly examining transnational text circulation and alternative practices in participatory cultures.
Evans's research spans queer cinema translation, fandom practices, film remakes as translation forms, and translation's political dimensions. His current projects include a monograph on Translating Queer Cinema (with Ting Guo), expanding their AHRC-funded Translating for Change project, and research on 1960s-1970s countercultural connections funded by a Royal Society of Edinburgh grant. He has extensive work on fan translation, including the Fan Translations book with Guo exploring Global South and queer fandoms.
His recent publications demonstrate strong focus on Korean media translation, queer representation, and streaming services, showing consistent theoretical rigor while adapting to digital and participatory contexts in translation studies. The work reveals increasing attention to sustainability in translation practices and transnational queer movements.

He teaches courses including Translation Studies in Theory and Practice, Subtitling Film and TV, and contributes to the Glasgow-Nankai Joint Graduate School. Evans serves as deputy editor of The Journal of Specialised Translation and sits on multiple editorial boards for leading translation journals.
