Jonathan E. Collins is an Assistant Professor of Political Science and Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, with a courtesy appointment in Columbia’s Department of Political Science. He serves as Co-Director of the Politics & Education Program, Director of the School Board and Youth Engagement (S-BYE) Lab, and Associate Director of the Center for Educational Equity. Collins focuses on how politics and democratic governance influence education policy and outcomes, with expertise in urban school reform, school board governance, civics education, and participatory budgeting. His work emphasizes community-engaged research alongside large-scale data collection and technological innovations to enhance government accessibility and equity.
Collins holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from UCLA, an M.A. in African American Studies (UCLA), and a B.A. in English from Morehouse College. He has been a frequent political analyst for media outlets like Scripps News and KBLA Talk, and contributes op-eds to the Washington Post, Education Week, and Phi Delta Kappan. His research explores topics such as school reopening during the pandemic, deliberative school board meetings, and racial justice in education policy.
Collins’ S-BYE Lab develops platforms like OUTREACH to foster community-school engagement. His recent work highlights trends in school board elections, critical race theory debates, and the role of technology in education. Grants and partnerships support his initiatives in participatory democracy and equitable urban education systems.
