Dr. Jonathan Duquette is a Lecturer in Sanskrit at the University of Cambridge's Faculty of Divinity and a Bye-Fellow in South Asian Religions and Philosophies at Selwyn College. He holds a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from the University of Montreal (2011) and has held postdoctoral positions at institutions including the University of Hamburg, Leiden University, Kyoto University, and the University of Oxford. His research focuses on late medieval and early modern Sanskrit intellectual traditions in India, particularly the history of Śivādvāīnta Vedānta and the scholarly practices of traditional pandits in modern India. He is the author of Defending God in Sixteenth-Century India: The Saiva Oeuvre of Appaya Diksita (Oxford University Press, 2021) and serves as Assistant Editor of the Journal of Indian Philosophy. His current work employs digital humanities methods, including social network analysis, to study the intellectual contributions of Advaita Vedānta pandits during India's transition to modernity.
Teaching responsibilities include intermediate/advanced Sanskrit texts and courses on Hinduism and Indian philosophy. He supervises MPhil students on topics aligned with his research. Awards include fellowships from the Newton International and Marie-Curie programs.
Research interests span Sanskrit intellectual history, classical Indian philosophy, and the intersection of natural sciences with religious thought. Ongoing projects investigate the role of pandits in early modern India's socio-religious landscape, blending philology, prosopography, and digital humanities.
