Andrew J. Nicholson is an Associate Professor at Stony Brook University's Department of Asian and Asian American Studies. He joined the faculty in 2006 and specializes in Indian philosophy, medieval Vedānta, and the intellectual history of Hinduism. His research explores the evolution of Hindu thought and its transnational influences. Nicholson holds a Ph.D. in South Asian Languages and Civilizations from the University of Chicago, alongside M.A. degrees in Religious Studies (University of Chicago) and Philosophy (DePaul University).
He is a recipient of the American Academy of Religion's 2011 Best First Book Award for Unifying Hinduism. His second major publication, Lord Śiva's Song (2014), examines medieval Sanskrit philosophical texts. Nicholson teaches courses on Hinduism, Sanskrit, yoga theory, and comparative religious philosophy. He actively contributes to academic communities through roles at SUNY Press, Columbia University's South Asia Seminar, and the American Institute of Indian Studies.
His research has been supported by grants from Fulbright-Hays, Robert Bosch Stiftung, and the Martin Marty Center. Nicholson's work bridges textual analysis with historical context, emphasizing how philosophical ideas shape religious identities.
