Jonathan Dovey

Jonathan Dovey is a Professor of Screen Media at the University of the West of England (UWE), affiliated with the Department of Creative Industries within the Faculty of Arts, Creative Industries, and Education (ACE). He serves as Director of REACT, an AHRC Creative Economy Hub focused on Research and Enterprise for Arts and Creative Technologies. His career spans over three decades, including 15 years in video production as a researcher, editor, and producer in documentary and experimental video before joining academia in 1996. He briefly moved to the University of Bristol from 2004 to 2007 before returning to UWE.

His research expertise includes mobile media, new media theory, game cultures, documentary film, and creative technologies. Notable works include New Media: A Critical Introduction (Routledge, 2003/2009), a seminal textbook, and Game Cultures (2006). His current work with REACT emphasizes knowledge exchange in the Creative Economy sector.

Publications span academic books and journal articles addressing digital media evolution, online documentary forms, and mobile audience engagement. He actively participates in national debates on creative industries and cultural innovation.
