Jonathan D. Zuegel is a Senior Scientist and Laser Development and Engineering Division Director at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) at the University of Rochester. He earned his B.S. and M.Eng. in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University (1983–1984) and a Ph.D. in Optics from the Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester (1996).
- Education:
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Cornell University (1983)
- Masters of Engineering in Electrical Engineering, Cornell University (1984)
- Ph.D. in Optics, University of Rochester (1996)
Research Interests: Dr. Zuegel specializes in Solid-State Lasers, Nonlinear Optics, Electro-Optics, and Laser Diagnostics, with a focus on diode-pumped lasers, optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA), high-speed electro-optic devices, fiber laser systems, and advanced laser beam smoothing techniques.
Role in Scientific Community: He has held leadership roles in major conferences, including program and general chair positions for the OSA Advanced Solid State Photonics (ASSP), the International Committee on Ultra-Intense Lasers (ICUIL), and the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO). He also serves on the CLEO Steering Committee and international advisory committees for the Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI) in Europe.
Labs and Collaborations: His research directly supports advanced laser systems at LLE, including the OMEGA and OMEGA EP lasers, and the National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
