Jonathan Crossen serves as a Visiting Professor in the Department of History at Carleton University during his research residency from June 10 to July 4, 2025, sponsored by Professor Dominique Marshall. He maintains his primary affiliation with the Centre for Sámi Studies at UiT the Arctic University of Norway in Romsa, Sápmi / Tromsø, Norway.
His research specializes in the history of Indigenous internationalism during the late twentieth century, with current focus on 1990s Indigenous diplomacy including women's activism, youth conferences, responses to European seal skin restrictions, and the 1992 Kari-Oca Conference. He examines how inter-governmental forums like the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations and Arctic Council advanced Indigenous rights while analyzing connections between the UN Decade for Women (1976-1985) and the International Year of the World's Indigenous People (1993) in catalyzing global Indigenous collaboration.
Crossen conducts archival research at Library and Archives Canada and Inuit Circumpolar Council Canada while building scholarly networks across Carleton's History, NPSIA, SPAA, FIST, and Indigenous Studies units. He presented findings through a CNHH-organized hybrid event and plans to develop expanded international research projects on Indigenous diplomacy.
