Jonathan C. Schisler

Jonathan C. Schisler is an Assistant Professor of Pharmacology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine and a Member of the McAllister Heart Center. His research integrates complex genomic-biologic data to elucidate risk relationships in both murine and human systems with a focus on cardiovascular disease and protein quality control mechanisms.

Dr. Schisler's research program centers on:

• Protein quality control mechanisms and E3 ligases (particularly CHIP and MuRF1)
• Cardiovascular genomics and proteinopathies in neuronal and cardiovascular disease
• Integration of clinical genomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics datasets
• Cellular regulatory mechanisms including post-translational regulation pathways

The Schisler Lab made significant contributions by identifying the first human causal mutation in CHIP that results in cerebellar ataxia and hypogonadism, expanding their research to include neuro and neuro-endocrine approaches. They utilize animal and cell-based models alongside clinically-derived datasets to study human diseases, including research identifying genetic variations between Caucasian and African Americans that modify sugar metabolism genes contributing to diabetes and cardiovascular risk.

Dr. Schisler received the 2023-24 Mentoring Award for his contributions to student development.

His lab actively collaborates with public health colleagues to extend translational research to at-risk populations where health disparities are prevalent. Recently, his team secured $1 million in funding from the NC Collaboratory for a project on 'Machine Learning-enabled personalized medicine to improve severe COVID-19 outcomes' in partnership with SAS, led as a multi-PI effort with Matthew Wolfgang.

The Schisler Lab maintains an active research environment with postdoctoral researchers, BBSP rotation students, and undergraduate researchers through initiatives like the MHI SUMMER program for underrepresented students in science.
