Jonathan Burgess is a Professor of Classics at the University of Toronto, with a focus on ancient Greek epic poetry, particularly Homer and the Epic Cycle. His research explores the Trojan War tradition, the figure of Achilles, and the interplay between Homeric texts and travel literature.
His academic contributions include two monographs, The Tradition of the Trojan War in Homer and the Epic Cycle (2001) and The Death and Afterlife of Achilles (2009), alongside a forthcoming book on Homer for graduate humanities students. Currently, he leads an interdisciplinary project analyzing the Odyssey through the lens of travel literature.
Notable honors include a fellowship at the Jackman Humanities Institute (2008-2009), supporting his research on Homeric themes and their influence in classical studies.
