Egbert Bakker is the Alvan Talcott Professor of Classics at Yale University, serving as Director of Graduate Studies in Spring 2020. He holds a PhD from Leiden University (1988) and has taught at institutions including the University of Texas at Austin, Université de Montréal, University of Virginia, and Leiden University. His expertise spans Greek language, literature, and linguistics, focusing on poetic problems, Homeric studies, and the interplay between oral and written traditions.
Research interests include Homeric poetry and language, oral poetry, narrative linguistics, and distinctions between speech and writing. Current projects involve a commentary on Iliad Book 11 (CUP) and a new Homeric grammar (OUP). Recent publications include Authorship and Greek Song (2017), The Meaning of Meat (2013), and A Companion to the Ancient Greek Language (2010).
His work analyzes linguistic aspects of epic poetry, emphasizing performance, formulaic systems, and the evolution of narrative forms. Upcoming projects include a commentary on Odyssey Book 9 (2025).
