Jonathan Berger is the Denning Family Provostial Professor in Music at Stanford University, where he teaches composition, music theory, and cognition. He directs the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) and previously founded the Stanford Institute for Creativity and the Arts (SICA) and Yale University’s Center for Studies in Music Technology.

Research Focus spans music cognition, computational music, and interdisciplinary intersections between music, science, and technology. He leads a Templeton Religion Trust-funded project exploring how music and architecture evoke awe. His work integrates creative practice with empirical research, supported by grants from DARPA, the Wallenberg Foundation, and the National Academy of Sciences.

Grants and Collaborations include funding from The National Endowment for the Arts, Mellon Foundation, and Rockefeller Foundation. His compositions, performed internationally by ensembles like Kronos Quartet, address themes of consciousness, conscience, and social justice, with recent works like The Ritual of Breath is the Rite to Resist (2024).
