Jon Wheatley is a Senior Lecturer in Comparative Politics at the School of Law and Social Sciences, Oxford Brookes University. His research focuses on European party systems, political cleavages, democratisation, and the application of Voting Advice Applications (VAAs) in electoral processes. He is a founding member of the Preference Matcher consortium, which has deployed VAAs in over 30 countries to match voters with political parties and candidates based on issue priorities. Wheatley’s work examines post-Soviet political dynamics, particularly in Georgia, and explores the evolving relevance of traditional left-right ideological frameworks in modern politics.
Teaching responsibilities include modules on nationalism, regime change, and comparative political systems. He actively supervises PhD students in areas aligning with his expertise in comparative democratisation and VAA technologies. Recent research highlights include analyzing candidate policy impacts in Welsh regional elections and investigating cultural cleavages in post-Soviet societies.
His publications span journals such as European Journal of Political Research, Regional & Federal Studies, and Europe-Asia Studies, demonstrating contributions to both comparative methodology and region-specific political analysis. Wheatley’s work bridges theoretical political science with applied electoral tools, emphasizing the role of digital platforms in modern democratic engagement.
