Jon Niemi

Jon Niemi, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurosciences at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. His research focuses on neuroimmunological mechanisms driving axonal regeneration in the peripheral nervous system, particularly the role of macrophages and neutrophils in injury response and repair. Dr. Niemi holds a BS in Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience & Biochemistry from the University of Mount Union and a PhD in Neurosciences from Case Western Reserve University.

Research Interests: Dr. Niemi investigates how immune cells like macrophages and neutrophils contribute to peripheral nerve regeneration. His work explores cytokine signaling pathways, macrophage recruitment dynamics, and the molecular mechanisms enabling functional recovery after injuries such as sciatic nerve damage or spinal cord injury. Key areas include conditioning lesion effects, gp130 signaling in diabetes-related nerve dysfunction, and the role of chemokines like CCL2.

Professional Contributions: Active member of the Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience and Society for Neuroscience. Teaches NEUR 101 (The Human Brain) and NEUR 301 (Biological Mechanisms of Brain Disorders).
