Jon McMillan

Jon McMillan is an Assistant Professor of Ceramics at James Madison University (JMU) since 2024. Previously, he spent 13 years at the University of Mary Washington (UMW), serving as Chair of the Department of Art and Art History for seven years and Gallery Director for four years. He holds an MFA in Ceramics from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and a BFA from JMU with a minor in Art History.

His professional practice includes sculptural and functional ceramic artwork, kiln design and construction, and curation of ceramics exhibitions. Notable exhibitions include solo shows at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Tennessee Tech University, Hunter College, and Luniverre Gallery in France. He has received the Grellet Simpson Award for Teaching Excellence (2017) and a VMFA Professional Artist Fellowship (2019).

McMillan teaches university courses and leads ceramics workshops at institutions like Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, Clay Art Center, and The Glassell School of Fine Art. His work bridges studio practice with academic roles, emphasizing hands-on creation alongside educational leadership.
