Jon Lundberg is a Professor of Pharmacology and research group leader at Karolinska Institutet's Department of Physiology and Pharmacology. His research focuses on nitric oxide (NO) signaling in cardiovascular health and disease, with emphasis on the nitrate-nitrite-NO pathway. Key projects include exploring NO's roles in hypertension, metabolic disorders, and bacterial interactions. He leads the Pharmacological Nitric Oxide Research group, investigating NO's therapeutic potential in conditions like myocardial infarction and stroke.
Education includes a University Medical Degree (1993) and Docent title (1999) from Karolinska Institutet. His work bridges basic science and translational medicine, with grants from the Swedish Research Council and Heart-Lung Foundation. Collaborations involve studying NO's effects on red blood cell function, gut microbiome interactions, and dietary interventions. Notable contributions include discovering the role of oral nitrate in cardiovascular homeostasis and its microbiota-dependent bioactivation.
Advises doctoral students such as Karin Eriksson and Halla Halldorsdottir, and oversees a lab with expertise in molecular biology and NO detection techniques. Recent articles highlight NO's cardioprotective mechanisms, gut microbiome modulation, and antibacterial applications of nitrite. Future work targets NO-dependent signaling pathways and their implications in metabolic syndromes and infectious diseases.
