Jon Helge Sætre

Jon Helge Sætre is an Associate Professor in the Department of Music Pedagogy and Music Therapy at the Norwegian Academy of Music. His academic work focuses on the intersection of music education, teacher training, and pedagogical research, with particular emphasis on how music is taught in educational settings across different levels.

His research interests include music pedagogy, music didactics, higher music education, and teacher education research, employing mixed methods approaches to investigate educational practices. Sætre's work often examines power dynamics in instrumental teaching, inclusive pedagogies for diverse learners, and the balance between tradition and innovation in music performance education.

Sætre completed his PhD in 2014 with a dissertation titled Preparing generalist student teachers to teach music. A mixed-methods study of teacher educators and educational content in generalist teacher education music courses, applying Bourdieu's and Bernstein's theoretical frameworks to examine how music is recontextualized within teacher education programs.
