Ellen Mikalsen Stabell is a Senior Adviser at the Music Education and Music Therapy Department of The Norwegian Academy of Music. She holds a PhD in Music Education (2018) and has extensive experience in music pedagogy, talent development, and piano didactics. Her doctoral research explored learning cultures in junior conservatoires, focusing on how talent is nurtured and performance careers are shaped. Stabell advises initiatives like LATIMPE and CEMPE's platform for music performance education. She has also contributed to institutional change processes in higher music education and published widely on topics such as student expertise, embodied learning, and historical perspectives in music education.
Education: PhD Research Fellow (2012-2018), Master’s in Music Education (2008-2010), and Bachelor’s in Music Education (2003-2007), all from The Norwegian Academy of Music. Additional studies include Music Theory (2007-2008).
Research Interests: Her work centers on learning cultures, talent development, music performance education, and institutional change in music education. She employs sociocultural theory and Bourdieu’s concepts of habitus and capital to analyze educational dynamics. Key projects include studies on junior conservatoires, excellence centers, and student-centered pedagogy.
Awards: Recipient of the Honorary Buddy Award (2020).
Professional Roles: Advisor for CEMPE and LATIMPE platforms, former Executive Officer for Quality Assurance at The Norwegian Academy of Music, and private piano teacher (2003-2015). She leads projects like the 2012-2018 study on junior conservatoires and contributes to conferences such as MHPC22.
Labs/Teams: Active in CERM (Musicians' Health and Performance) and CEMPE (Centre for Excellence in Music Performance Education), collaborating on institutional development and pedagogical innovation.
