Professor Jon Heffernan serves as Professor of Semiconductor Materials and Devices at the University of Sheffield and Director of the EPSRC National Epitaxy Facility, a position he has held for over 12 years. Under his leadership, the facility has evolved into a national center of excellence supporting semiconductor research across 25+ UK universities and industry partners through provision of world-class wafers.
His research expertise spans semiconductor materials and devices with pioneering contributions to optoelectronic systems including lasers, LEDs, solar cells, and quantum emitters. This work bridges industrial applications and academic innovation, driving advancements in semiconductor technology critical to the UK's national strategy.
As Director of the UKRI-funded National Epitaxy Facility, Professor Heffernan manages significant research infrastructure grants enabling cutting-edge R&D. The facility's expansion under his tenure positions it as a cornerstone of the UK's semiconductor ecosystem, facilitating collaborations between academia and industry.
