Dr. Jon H. Carter is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Appalachian State University. He holds a Ph.D. (2012) from Columbia University, an M.A. (2003) from Columbia University, and a B.A. (1998) from Appalachian State University. His research focuses on criminality, aesthetics, and politics in Honduras, exploring how gangs and statecraft intersect within neoliberal frameworks. His seminal work, *Gothic Sovereignty: Street Gangs and Statecraft in Honduras* (2022), examines gang evolution and state corruption. He is also completing a second book on ethnographic methods.
His research areas include politics and affect, sovereignty and law, psychoanalysis and history, borders/immigration, incarceration/surveillance, ethnographic methods, media theory, and fictocriticism, with regional expertise in Honduras, Latin America, and the Philippines. His work has been supported by the Wenner-Gren Foundation, Appalachian State University grants, and the Claassen Research Enhancement Award.
Dr. Carter’s awards include the Claassen Research Enhancement Award. His scholarship bridges anthropology, criminology, and political theory, addressing global issues like migration, carcerality, and neoliberalism. He contributes to academic forums such as *Critical Criminology*, *Journal of Historical Sociology*, and *American Ethnologist*.
