معرفی
Jon Fisher, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Biology at Saint Louis University (SLU), part of the College of Arts and Sciences. He joined SLU in 2001 and leads a research lab focused on skeletal muscle metabolism, particularly the regulation of glucose transport, insulin signaling, and mitochondrial function under metabolic stress. His work explores how exercise and metabolic challenges influence insulin sensitivity and antioxidant defenses.
Dr. Fisher’s research collaborations include comparative physiologists, biochemists, and computational biologists. He has mentored numerous undergraduate and graduate students, including Zenae Cherry (PhD candidate), Lauren Sugiyama (Health Science major), Laurine Shoki (Biology senior), and others. His lab is based in Macelwane Hall and the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building.
Key research areas include the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS), myoglobin’s antioxidant functions, and the molecular mechanisms linking exercise to improved glucose uptake. His lab has received internal SLU grants and acknowledges major donor Rex Sinquefield. Students in his lab have excelled in competitions and awards, such as Laurine Shoki’s Medhoff Teaching Award and Zenae Cherry’s Cynthia Chapelle Excellence Award.
Dr. Fisher teaches courses like Principles of Biology I and Exercise Physiology. His lab’s resilience is highlighted by its relocation post-2017 fire, demonstrating adaptability in maintaining research continuity.
