Jojin Van Winkle is an Associate Professor of Art and Chair of the Art Department at Carthage College. She also directs the Photography, Film, and New Media Program. Her work bridges visual art, film, and audio to explore resilience, environmental stewardship, and human rights, particularly focusing on children's/youth rights. Her practice emphasizes 'listening' as a method to document underrepresented narratives.
Van Winkle holds an MFA and MA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (both in film/video) and a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She previously directed the Education Department at the University of Virginia’s Fralin Museum of Art (2006–2008).
Her research manifests in experimental films like The Destruction Project (2021), documentaries such as In the Shadow of Ebola (2015), and installations. Her work has screened globally, including at the Smithsonian and the Royal Anthropological Institute’s film festival.
Van Winkle received the prestigious 2022–23 RAM Fellowship from the Racine Art Museum, culminating in a solo exhibition at the Wustum Museum of Fine Arts (2023). Her 2021 The Destruction Project earned an Honorable Mention at the NYC Video and Art Experimental Film Festival.
Her creative and curatorial work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, with exhibitions in Rome, Toronto, and Milwaukee. She is currently based in Racine, Wisconsin, and runs jojinprojects.com.
