Johnny Finn serves as an Assistant Professor of Geography at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia. His academic work bridges cultural geography with musical studies, focusing on how cultural forces shape urban social rhythms and spatial relationships.
Dr. Finn's research interests include:
- Cultural geography of music
- Race and urban landscapes
- Social rhythms in urban environments
- Cultural mapping practices
- Music as social practice rather than merely aesthetic expression
His scholarly approach uniquely combines academic research with practical musical experience, particularly in Brazilian and Cuban musical traditions. Dr. Finn has conducted extensive field research in Ghana, Cuba, Brazil, and along the US-Mexico border, examining how music functions as an active ingredient in social life rather than merely an art form.
As both scholar and practitioner, he specializes in Brazilian and Cuban music, having appeared on five albums with four different musical groups. He regularly performs, records, teaches, and leads percussion workshops throughout the United States, bringing his practical experience into dialogue with his academic research.
