John Withey is a Professor in the Master of Environmental Studies (MES) program at The Evergreen State College since 2016. His research focuses on ecological responses to climate change and land-use in urban environments, employing field studies, modeling, and GIS analysis. He holds a Ph.D. in Forest Resources (University of Washington, 2006), M.S. in Wildlife Science (2002), and B.A. in Biology (Pomona College, 1991).
Teaching emphasizes critical thinking and data literacy through courses like Data Analysis & Visualization in R, Research Design, and field-based studies like Tropical Ecology (Costa Rica). Recent work includes modeling forest green-up timing, landowner adaptation to climate policy, and phenological mismatches in bird migration.
Current research explores urban ecology and ecosystem-based adaptation strategies. He co-leads the Graduate Program on the Environment, emphasizing interdisciplinary solutions for environmental challenges. Collaborative projects include the Pheno-Mismatch initiative and spatial analysis of conservation easements for sage grouse.
