John Wirthlin Hickey is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Duke University's Pratt School of Engineering, with secondary appointments in Cell Biology & Bioinformatics and Biostatistics & Bioinformatics. He is also a member of the Duke Cancer Institute.
- PhD, Biomedical Engineering, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (2019)
- Postdoctoral Training, Nolan Lab, Stanford University (2023)
Dr. Hickey's research focuses on systems immunology tools and spatial cellular interactions in tissues, particularly for cancer immunotherapy applications. His work integrates multiplexed imaging, computational modeling, and biomaterials engineering to analyze and manipulate immune-tumor dynamics.
The 15 most recent publications span topics in spatial serology, hydrogel-based immunotherapy, macrophage heterogeneity, and 3D human reference mapping. Key collaborative projects include contributions to the Human BioMolecular Atlas Program (HuBMAP) and development of artificial lymph node matrices.
Scientific Awards:
- NSF Graduate Research Fellowship
- ARCS Scholar
- Siebel Scholar
- NCI Postdoctoral Fellowship
- American Cancer Society Postdoctoral Fellowship
- NSF CAREER Award (2025)
Dr. Hickey's lab includes 15+ researchers spanning PhD students in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, and Cancer Biology, along with Masters and undergraduate students. His team has received grants from the National Science Foundation, NIAID, and NIGMS for projects on cellular heterogeneity, influenza immunology, and biomolecular training programs.
