Professor John Williams is the Provost at the University of Adelaide, leading the Office of the Vice-Chancellor and President. He holds a Professorial appointment in the Adelaide Law School, where he has been since 1997. Previously, he served as a Reader at the Australian National University (2004–2005) and held roles from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer at Adelaide Law School (1997–2003). His research focuses on public law, Australian constitutional law, legal history, and water law, particularly the Murray-Darling Basin's regulatory framework. He has secured numerous Australian Research Council grants and national competitive funding.
Williams has edited key legal journals, including the Australian Journal of Legal History and Adelaide Law Review, and co-founded the New Federalist. He actively contributes to academic and governmental committees, such as the National Archives Advisory Council, the South Australian Fulbright Committee, and the United Nations Good Offices Mission in Cyprus since 2009. His professional activities include roles with the Don Dunstan Foundation and UniBooks Pty Ltd.
Recipient of the Centenary of Federation Medal (2001), Williams supervises Masters and PhD candidates, emphasizing constitutional reform, federalism, and water management. His interdisciplinary work bridges legal theory and environmental governance.
