Michael Young is a Professor and Research Chair in Energy, Water, and Environmental Policy at the University of Adelaide, affiliated with the School of Economics and Public Policy within the Faculty of Arts, Business, Law, and Economics. He is also an Honorary Professor at University College London. His career spans over 30 years in academia, policy research, and leadership roles, including founding the University of Adelaide’s Environment Institute and leading the OECD’s agricultural-environmental policy integration work. Young holds degrees in Economics and Agricultural Science and has authored over 250 publications.
His research focuses on market-based approaches to natural resource management, water scarcity solutions, and transformative environmental policies. Notable contributions include pioneering Australia’s water entitlement trading systems, designing water allocation frameworks for the Murray-Darling Basin, and advocating for sustainable groundwater management in California and the U.S. West. He has held prestigious roles such as the Gough Whitlam and Malcolm Fraser Chair in Australian Studies at Harvard University (2013–14) and led the UNEP’s green growth strategy for global water systems.
Young’s awards include the Centenary Medal (2003), South Australian of the Year (2009), and the Land and Water Australia Eureka Award (2006). He sits on numerous boards and committees, including the Global Water Partnership Technical Committee and the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Water Security. His work emphasizes integrating biophysical and economic data to drive policy reforms, with a focus on water pricing, abstraction regimes, and environmental justice.
