John Whicker is an Assistant Professor at Cumberland University's Jeanette C. Rudy School of Nursing and Health Professions, appointed in 2018. He holds an A.S. from Nashville State Community College (2012), B.S.N. and M.S.N. from Cumberland University (2014 and 2018, respectively), and is a doctoral candidate at East Tennessee State University pursuing a PhD in Nursing and a Biostatistics Certificate.
His research focuses on nursing workforce dynamics, burnout mitigation, and optimizing nurse work environments. He has extensive clinical experience, including roles as a Research Nurse Specialist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (Department of Infectious Diseases), Public Health Nurse/Disease Intervention Specialist for the Tennessee Department of Health, and Emergency Medical Technician. He contributed to HIV/AIDS counseling, tuberculosis case management, and outbreak response.
He currently teaches courses in Community Health Nursing, Professional Foundations, and Health Assessment. Recognized for expertise in Health Systems and Policy, he serves on the American Association of Colleges of Nursing's Healthy People Curriculum Taskforce. He is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International and Gamma Beta Phi honor societies.
Whicker actively participates in global humanitarian missions, including work in Eastern Europe, Central America, East Asia, and Appalachia. His career combines clinical practice, research, and education to address systemic challenges in healthcare delivery and workforce sustainability.
