John Werner is a Biology Professor at Wisconsin Lutheran College (WLC), specializing in microbiology and molecular biology. He holds a B.A. in Biology and Chemistry from Luther College, a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology from Arizona State University, and completed postdoctoral research at Princeton University. His research focuses on antibiotic resistance mechanisms, bacteriophage therapy, and novel antimicrobial strategies such as silver nanoparticles and ozone sterilization devices. He advises students on projects involving bacterial efflux pumps, phage therapy, and antimicrobial agents.
Werner has led WLC’s iGEM teams to multiple medals, including a Gold Medal in 2015 for Project Tolsee. His scholarly works include studies on bacterial cell division mechanisms, CTP synthase cytoskeletal filaments, and evolutionary genetics related to human amylase. He actively participates in academic service, including roles in the American Society for Microbiology.
Teaching responsibilities include courses in Microbiology, Immunology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, and Research Strategies. His research emphasizes practical applications of microbiology, such as detecting contaminants in water and developing alternative antibacterial methods.
