John Waterbor

John Waterbor is a semi-retired Associate Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Public Health, serving part-time since 2014. He teaches courses like Principles of Epidemiologic Research and Cancer Epidemiology and Control, and advises graduate students. His research focuses on cancer prevention, epidemiologic methods, and injury control, with over 100 publications including landmark studies on MLB player mortality and sepsis risks in cancer survivors. Awards include the UAB President's Excellence in Teaching Award (1993, 2005) and Dean's Distinguished Alumnus (2024). He leads committees such as the Journal of Cancer Education and chairs the UAB School of Public Health's A & G Advisory Committee. His grants include the NCI-funded CaRES cancer training program. He is a Past President of the UAB Delta Omega Public Health Honors Society and member of the Alabama Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalition.
