John Ward is a Professor in the Department of Geography and Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, where he also serves as Director of GIS within the College of Social Sciences and Professional Studies. He holds a PhD in Environmental Dynamics from the University of Arkansas (2007), an MA in Cultural and Environmental Resource Management from Central Washington University, and a BA in Anthropology from the same institution. His research focuses on geospatial technology applications in cultural and environmental studies, including cyber geography, disaster management, and resource preservation. Ward has conducted fieldwork across multiple countries including Jamaica, South Africa, and Finland.
Teaching interests include GIS, physical geography, and natural disaster studies. He coordinates the GIS minor and certificate programs, manages the GIS Lab, and has received notable teaching awards including the 2013 Stella Gray Teaching Excellence Award. His service roles include chairing the Geography and Anthropology Department Executive Committee and leading the GIS Steering Committee. Courses taught span mapping, cartography, cultural resource conservation, and field mapping techniques.
Key contributions include analyzing the intersection of technology and culture through studies of music heritage preservation, railroad history, and smart city concepts. Current initiatives focus on community-based GIS projects to support regional development planning.
