John Kostelnick is a Professor in the Department of Geography, Geology, and the Environment at Illinois State University, where he also serves as Director of the Institute for Geospatial Analysis and Mapping (GEOMAP). His work focuses on GIScience and cartographic applications in crisis response, cultural mapping, and environmental analysis.
Dr. Kostelnick's research interests span several key areas of GIScience:
- Crisis mapping for emergency response and humanitarian relief
- Geovisualization techniques and cartographic design
- Integration of GIS into science and society
- Cultural mapping of human attributes such as language, ethnicity, and religion
- Sea level rise modeling and visualization
- Environmental Sensitivity Index mapping
His work demonstrates a strong commitment to applying geographic information science to real-world problems, particularly in emergency management and humanitarian contexts.
Dr. Kostelnick has presented research at international venues including the 2017 International Cartographic Conference. His projects have involved collaborations with organizations such as the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD), NOAA, and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.
