Francis Harvey is a Professor of Visual Communication in Geography at the University of Leipzig and Coordinator of the Research Group 'Data and Practices' at the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography (IfL). His career includes roles as Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota (2004–2014), Visiting Professor at the University of Warsaw (2015–2024), and Senior Lecturer at the University of Leicester (2007). He holds a doctoral degree from the University of Washington (1993–1996) and has extensive experience in spatial planning and GIS applications.
Research interests focus on geovisualisation, GIScience, cartography, and ethical dimensions of spatial data. His work explores the intersection of technology and geography, with notable contributions to cadastral systems, spatial data infrastructure, and qualitative geovisualization. Key projects include 'Thinking Through Places' and 'Visualising qualitative geographies,' advancing methodologies for population movement analysis and thematic mapping.
Harvey is actively involved in academic leadership, serving as Chair of the International Geographical Union's Geographical Information Science Commission (since 2012) and on editorial boards for journals like Cartographica and International Journal of Geographical Information Science. His recent publications emphasize practical ethics in geography and critical perspectives on cartographic practices.
