Dr. John Wannop is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary, specializing in biomechanics. He holds a PhD in biomechanics from 2012 and has served as an adjunct professor in the Human Performance Lab. His research focuses on optimizing athletic performance and injury prevention through footwear, sport surfaces, and apparel. Key interests include traction dynamics, midsole mechanics, and gender-based biomechanical differences.
Education: PhD in Biomechanics (2012). Previous roles include adjunct professor and co-editor of Footwear Science.
Research interests emphasize footwear-traction interactions, surface biomechanics, and apparel effects on movement. Recent work explores carbon-fiber plates, midsole stiffness, and artificial turf properties. His 2023 studies highlight midsole thickness impacts on performance and injury risk across genders.
Publications reflect a focus on running economy, injury mechanics, and sport-surface engineering. Over 30 peer-reviewed articles span 2009–2025, with notable work on cleat slipping and basketball footwear disparities.
Received the 2011 Young Investigator Award for footwear traction research. Collaborates with labs like the Human Performance Lab, advancing applied biomechanics in sports equipment design.
