Dr. Songning Zhang is a Professor in the Department of Kinesiology, Recreation, and Sport Studies at the University of Tennessee, affiliated with the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences. He serves as co-director of the Biomechanics/Sports Medicine Laboratory and holds visiting professorships at Shanghai University of Sports and Nanjing Sports Institute, China. His research focuses on biomechanics of gait, cycling, athletic footwear, musculoskeletal modeling, and injury mechanisms in clinical populations. He has received funding from companies like adidas and Smith & Nephew for studies on footwear and orthoses.
Dr. Zhang earned a PhD in Biomechanics and Exercise Science from the University of Oregon, an MA in Sports Training from Shanghai University of Sports, and a BE in Physical Education from Nanjing Normal University. He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and serves on editorial boards for Journal of Sport and Health Science and Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport.
His research emphasizes biomechanical interventions for patients with total knee arthroplasty and osteoarthritis, as well as impact attenuation in sports surfaces. Recent work includes studies on synthetic turf biomechanics, stair negotiation biomechanics post-surgery, and cycling ergonomics. Over 150 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters reflect his expertise in musculoskeletal dynamics and clinical applications.
Dr. Zhang’s awards include ACSM Fellowship and grants from industry partnerships. His lab collaborations and editorial roles highlight his leadership in biomechanics research and clinical translation.
