John Timney is a part-time Lecturer in Music and Sound at the University of Sunderland's School of Creative Arts. He holds an MA in Music (Distinction) from Newcastle University and maintains a parallel career as a professional musician, audio producer, and freelance industry worker. His teaching focuses on BA (Hons) Music (Top-Up) and sound recording/mixing for BA (Hons) Film Production.
Research interests include the role of digital-native musicians, music cognition, field/location audio recording, and DAW-based composition. Professionally, he collaborates with artists like Shannon Pearl (neo-folk), Pointy Features (lo-fi/blues), and the Nick Gladdish Band, with projects scheduled for releases in 2025–2026. Technical expertise spans Steinberg Cubase, Adobe Audition, and Premiere Pro.
Prior experience includes radio audio production, live sound engineering, and stage technician roles. Notable performances include appearances at The Glasshouse and 02 Academy, Newcastle, with radio/TV features on BBC 6 Music and regional platforms.
