John Thurgood is a Horn Professor at the Royal College of Music (RCM) in the Brass Faculty. He studied at the RCM with Julian Baker and has established a distinguished career as both a performer and educator.
Professor Thurgood's research and performance interests focus on Horn Performance, Chamber Music, Orchestral Performance, and Commercial Music Recording. His expertise spans classical performance traditions as well as contemporary commercial projects, demonstrating versatility across musical genres and performance contexts.
Professor Thurgood's professional activities include:
- Principal Horn of the English National Opera orchestra
- Principal Horn of the English Chamber Orchestra since 1995
- Member of the E.C.O Ensemble and other prominent chamber groups
- Commercial recording work for major productions including Gladiator, Amazon's 'Lord of the Rings', Disney's 'Little Mermaid', and 'Spider Man' for Sony's Playstation
