John Tellam is a Professor of Hydrogeology at the University of Birmingham’s School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences. His research focuses on solute and particle transport in groundwater, particularly in sandstone aquifers, with recent projects addressing nanoparticle and virus movement in groundwater, and biogeochemical processes in nuclear waste contexts. He holds a BSc from the University of Southampton and MSc/PhD from the University of Birmingham.
Teaching roles include modules in Pollution Hydrogeology, Engineering Geology, and MSc Hydrogeology course coordination. His research utilizes the Water Sciences group’s facilities, including on-campus borehole arrays. He has supervised nearly 50 doctoral researchers and is actively involved in professional organizations like the Geological Society of London and the EPSRC review college.
Research interests include laboratory and field experimentation, with recent studies on ion exchange reactions, particle-virus interactions, and lithofacies correlations. His work addresses critical issues like groundwater security and contaminant dynamics in urban environments.
