Dr John Tate is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at the University of Newcastle’s Newcastle Business School. He was appointed as the foundation lecturer in Politics at the University in 1997 and has taught extensively across Australian politics, international relations, political philosophy, and public policy. His research focuses on political philosophy, history of political thought, and the liberal tradition, particularly the works of John Locke, toleration, freedom of speech, and multiculturalism. He has authored multiple books and articles in leading journals such as the American Journal of Political Science and Political Theory.
Dr Tate holds a PhD from the University of Sydney and a Bachelor of Economics (Honours Class I) from the same institution. His academic career includes roles such as Head of Discipline in Politics & International Relations (2010–2012), and current administrative roles like Student Academic Conduct Officer (SACO) for the Newcastle Business School. He has secured over $24,775 in research grants, including studies on Locke’s political philosophy, native title in New Zealand, and the limits of liberalism.
His teaching spans foundational courses in Australian politics, comparative government, and political theory. His research explores tensions between liberal values and non-liberal practices, modernity’s challenges to Enlightenment principles, and constitutional law frameworks in Australia, the US, and Britain. He has supervised multiple research students on topics ranging from utilitarian franchise reform to rural populism in Australian politics.
