Dr John Stone is an Associate Professor and Reader in War Studies at King's College London, affiliated with the Department of War Studies within the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy. He holds dual affiliations with the Centre for Grand Strategy and the Cyber Security Research Group (CSRG). His research focuses on strategic theory, the intersection of political imagination and military strategy, and critical analysis of historical strategic thinkers like Jomini, Mahan, and Douhet. He teaches undergraduate and postgraduate modules on military strategy's history and theory.
Stone's current projects include re-examining classic strategic texts and critiquing foundational strategic theories. His publications span Montesquieu's overlooked strategic insights, Hobbesian strategic frameworks, Isaiah Berlin's pluralist challenges to strategy, and Orwellian critiques of political warfare. He actively supervises PhD candidates in strategic thought history.
His work intersects with modern security concerns through CSRG's interdisciplinary cyber security research and the Centre for Grand Strategy's focus on applying historical expertise to statecraft and diplomacy. Recent academic activities include organizing the Douhet Wargame simulation at Strand Campus.
