John Staines is an Associate Professor of English at John Jay College of Criminal Justice (CUNY). He specializes in Renaissance and Early Modern literature and culture, with a focus on political rhetoric and religious violence. Before joining John Jay, he taught at the College of the Holy Cross and Earlham College, and earned his Ph.D. in English from Yale University.
His research explores how tragic narratives and political rhetoric shaped public opinion in Early Modern Europe. Key works include his monograph The Tragic Histories of Mary Queen of Scots (2009), analyzing political storytelling, and contributions to edited volumes on Early Modern emotions and British theater. Current research investigates religious violence in Early Modern contexts.
Publications span essays on John Milton, Edmund Spenser, and William Shakespeare, with interdisciplinary insights into cultural history and literary analysis. His work bridges literary studies, political theory, and historical scholarship.
