John Smith is a Professor of Chemistry at Lipscomb University with over 20 years of teaching experience. He holds a B.A. in Chemistry (Writing minor) from Drew University, an M.S. and Ph.D. in Chemistry from Vanderbilt University, and a J.D. in Intellectual Property/Environmental Law from Vanderbilt Law School. Before academia, he worked as an attorney at MBHB in Chicago and as a publishing professional. He currently serves as a Master Teaching Fellow at the Vanderbilt Center for Teaching, contributing to the design of the Vanderbilt Certificate in College Teaching program.
Smith's research focuses on basic inorganic chemistry, environmental/sustainable chemistry, and innovative chemistry education. He has published extensively in journals like Chemistry Education Research and Practice and Journal of Chemical Education, including pioneering work on flipped classrooms in chemistry education. His teaching spans undergraduate courses in general/organic chemistry, honors labs, inorganic chemistry, and courses linking chemistry to law and ethics.
He actively reviews for multiple education-focused journals and has guest-lectured on sustainability law and metals toxicity in forensics. Smith is a member of the American Chemical Society (subdivisions on Chemical Education and Inorganic Chemistry) and Sigma Xi. Beyond academia, he enjoys family time, weightlifting, martial arts, and a notable enthusiasm for dinosaurs.
