John Serrati

John Serrati is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Classics and Religious Studies at the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Arts and serves as Director of the University of Ottawa Museum of Classical Antiquities. Concurrently, he holds the position of Assistant Professor of Classics at John Abbott College in Montreal, a role he has maintained since 2004. His academic affiliations include memberships with the Classical Association of Canada, Classical Association, and institutional associations with the British School at Rome, Canadian Institute in Greece, and British School in Athens.

Serrati obtained his PhD in Greek, Latin, and Ancient History from the University of St Andrews (2001), following an MA (1995) and BA (1994) in Classics and Ancient History from McGill University. His research examines femininity and male virtus in Roman martial culture, Roman imperialism through Sicilian case studies, ancient state economies in warfare, and the reception of Classics in 19th-century Canada with focus on Indigenous relations.

As Museum Director, he oversees a collection spanning 7th century BC to 7th century AD artifacts and facilitates student engagement through hands-on workshops. He leads international study trips to Mediterranean archaeological sites including recent expeditions to Spain (2024), Greece/Turkey (2023), and Sicily (2019).

He currently supervises graduate student Madeline White and maintains professional activities as Programme Coordinator for the Archaeological Institute of America's Ottawa Society (2017-2022).
