John Reuter is an Adjunct Professor of Photography at the Hartford Art School, University of Hartford, where he teaches courses in analog and digital photography as well as cinema studies. He also serves as Director of the 20x24 Studio, preserving the legacy of large-format Polaroid photography and ensuring continued availability of film for artists.
Reuter received his undergraduate education at SUNY Geneseo and completed graduate studies at the University of Iowa, earning two master's degrees including an MFA in 1978. His academic journey was significantly influenced by professors Michael and Rosemary Teres, who encouraged his experimental approach to photography and painting.
Specializing in experimental photographic processes, Reuter is internationally recognized for his innovative work with Polaroid materials. His research spans Polaroid SX-70 constructions combining photography with painting and collage, Polacolor image transfers that manipulate film dyes, large-format 20x24 photography, and digital imaging techniques. His artistic practice consistently challenges conventional boundaries of the photographic medium through physical manipulation of film materials and creative integration of digital workflows.
His publications and creative works demonstrate a consistent evolution from physical manipulations of film in the 1970s-1990s to digital workflows while maintaining focus on the tactile qualities of image-making. The recurring theme across his career is the exploration of instant photography's artistic potential through material experimentation and technical innovation.
As Director of the 20x24 Studio, Reuter has maintained this specialized photographic process through Polaroid Corporation's bankruptcy, working with artists like William Wegman, Chuck Close, and Joyce Tenneson while ensuring the continuation of 20x24 film production through collaborations with Elsa Dorfman and others.
