Professor John Ravenscroft is the Chair of Childhood Visual Impairment at the Moray House School of Education and Sport, University of Edinburgh. He holds roles within the Institute for Education, Teaching and Leadership (IETL) and has extensive experience in academic leadership, including Deputy Head/Dean positions at Moray House. His research focuses on visual impairment inclusion, childhood disability studies, primate cognition, and the evolutionary mechanisms of cognition.

Research Interests: Professor Ravenscroft explores the nature of representation in individuals with visual impairments and primates. His work integrates cognitive theory with practical applications, such as developing national notification systems for visual impairment in Scotland and Australia. He emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to understanding how cognitive processes evolve in sighted and visually impaired populations.
Advising & Grants: Currently supervising three PhD students researching visual impairment and sport, transition, and language. His projects include 'School-age Sight Testing in Scotland' and 'The Competences of Teachers supporting Children with Visual Impairment.'
Labs/Teams: Formerly managed the Scottish Sensory Centre and collaborated with the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children in Australia. Active in promoting inclusive educational practices through policy development and teacher training initiatives.
